Many of the protesters from Tahrir Square called for the removal of Shafik and other ministers appointed by former President Hosni Mubarak from the Cabinet, and after a heated debate with novelist Alaa El Aswany on ONTV, Shafik submitted his resignation on March 3.
Sharaf served as Transportation Minister from July 2004 to December 2005, resigning the post after a massive train accident in Upper Egypt. Some observers at the time said he resigned over after disagreements with high-ranking officials on their policies.
Sharaf was greeted on March 4 at Tahrir Square by thousands of Egyptians to celebrate the new prime minister’s appointment. He won over the crowd after he announced he was there to draw his legitimacy from the revolutionaries.
