Egypt's president urges boosting local industry, localizing technology to meet market needs

CAIRO – 20 March 2021: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Saturday urged boosting local industry and localizing technology to meet the needs of the local market.

This comes in light of the growing production requirements of the national projects in all fields, the Presidency said in a statement.

The directives aim at bridging the gap between exports and imports and achieving self-sufficiency of local products and therefore decreasing exportation using foreign currency.

The president’s remarks came as he met with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Industry Minister Nevine Gamea.

During the meeting, Sisi urged comprehensive review and accurate inventory of plots that have been allocated for industrial activities but have not been ideally used as planned.

The president directed officials to seek the means to improve the use of these lands in light of the actual investment and developmental needs in each governorate.

Sisi also urged continuing efforts to establish industrial complexes nationwide.

During the meeting, Gamea reviewed with the president the executive status of industrial complexes on the ground, including those under construction.

She also reviewed the steps the ministry has taken to encourage the dependence on national industry.

In January, Sisi urged developing electricity-related infrastructure in the Egyptian villages, as part of a national initiative to achieve comprehensive development in the countryside.

The president ordered officials to rely on high-quality local industries within the initiative to achieve comprehensive development.
