Egypt’s road quality ranking advances thanks to national projects

CAIRO – 16 March 2021: Egypt’s roads have witnessed an extraordinary boom during the past five years, raising its global ranking in the Road Quality Index to 28th, thanks to the national road project launched in August 6, 2014.

Egypt’s ranking has advanced 90 places compared to its ranking in 2014, where it was in the 118th place.  

The project is believed to have resulted in a decrease in the rates of road accident by 41 percent, the injuries by more than 50 percent and the mortality rate.

In 2014, the state embarked on the new road network with lengths of 7,000 kms at a total cost of 175 billion pounds. The state has actually completed the implementation of 5,000 kms of new roads implemented by the ministries of defense, transport and housing.

The plan also included the construction of 21 new axes on the Nile at a rate of up to 55 percent of the 38 bridges on the Nile since the start of their construction, bringing the total of bridges and axes on the Nile to 59 bridges.

The state also began implementing an integrated plan to raise the efficiency and development of internal roads in the governorates by using modern technologies for recycling asphalt at an estimated cost of 10 billion pounds.

A large number of important roads were implemented, on top of which is the Rawd al-Farag-El-Dabaa Corridor, which connects the areas of North and East Cairo with the areas of West Cairo, the 26th of July Corridor and the Ring Road, where the corridor starts from Shubra El-Khaima, passing the Ring Road until the intersection with the Cairo-Alexandria Desert and Ring Road.
