Egypt's most famous botanical garden "Orman Garden"

CAIRO – 15 March 2021: As the oldest annual Spring Flowers Exhibition kicked Saturday in Egypt, et provides in the below lines information about the most famous botanical garden hosting the exhibition “Orman Garden.”

 

Located west of the Nile River in Giza, Orman Garden dates back to 1875, as it was established under the reign of Khedive Ismail Pasha, and designed by the French landscaper Jean-Pierre Barillet-Deschamps.

The garden became a public botanical garden in 1917, and was since put under the management of the Ministry of Agriculture.  

 

Covering about 28 acres, the garden includes 1,200 plant species, distributed according to plant families.

The garden includes seven main sections of “hebarium plant: to serve the purpose of scientific research, which includes 2,000 dried wild plant samples, 1,200 rare planted samples collected from all Egyptian gardens and 1,400 plant samples collected from the deserts of Egypt.

 

It features different sectors of rose, cactus and lotus flowers.

It has a seed exchange section, which includes seeds belonging to different plant families.

 

The garden further has a drawing and design department, which is specialized in making maps and drawings for gardens, as well as a cactus and succulent plant garden, which is located on an area of​​1.5 acres, and contains a rare collection of thorny and succulent plants collected from around the world.

The garden further includes a water pond planted with both hydroponic and semi-aquatic plants, as well as a rose garden, which has an area of ​​2 acres and includes many different roses.

 

It also includes a greenhouse, which is used to propagate plants in the garden, and raise them for cultivation inside the garden or sell them to the public at nominal prices.

 

Precautionary measures including wearing masks and keeping a safe distance were maintained among all the visitors of the flowers exhibition to avoid the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.
