ALGIERS - 18 Febuary 2021: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced Thursday the dissolution of parliament and holding early legislative elections amid anti-governmental protests.

In a televised speech, Tabboune also announced that a Cabinet reshuffle will be announced within 48 days.

He said that 55-60 detainees from the Hirak protest movement will be released.

"Youths should be engaged in the political institutions, and the state will help them through bearing a large part of the costs of their election campaigns," Tabboune added.

"The elections will be overseen by the independent election authority and will be integral," he said.

Thousands of Algerians demonstrated on Tuesday in the Algerian town of Kherrata to voice support for the Hirak protest movement that ousted Algeria’s veteran president Abdelaziz Bouteflika in 2019.

The protests were held to mark the second anniversary of the start of demonstrations in 2019, which began in Kherrata, east of the capital Algiers, before spreading across the country.
