CAIRO – 18 February 2021: Four people were killed and 46 others, including Sudanese nationals and 9 children under the age of 10, were injured in a road accident when a passenger bus collided with a truck along Abu Simbel International Highway, southern Aswan, on Thursday morning.

The killed and injured people were transported to Aswan University Hospital by 16 ambulances to receive the required medical treatment, according to a statement from Aswan Ambulance Department. The injuries varied from fractures, bleeding, scattered wounds, and bruises.

According to the initial investigations, the bus, which was traveling from Egypt to Sudan via land roads, collided with a truck loaded with cement.

Following the accident, Governor of Aswan Major General Ashraf Attia directed the General Authority for Roads and Bridges, in coordination with the Traffic Department, to install illustrative and phosphorous traffic signs and instructions in all directions, for passengers who come from and to Edfu/Kom Ombo or head to the Kalabsha axis to reach the western desert road Aswan / Cairo.

In October 2020, Egypt’s Cabinet Information Center published an infographic showing a decline in the number of deaths caused by road accidents in Egypt this year, compared to the past year.

The cabinet’s infograph explains that Egypt recorded 7,000 death cases in 2020, compared to 12,000 cases in 2019, meaning a 44 percent decrease in the rate.

It went on to say that this progress is powered by the state’s steps to develop road and bridge sectors, and adopt road safety measures to reduce the number of injuries and deaths.
