CAIRO – 15 February 2021: A total of 400 million Egyptian Pound were spent for the maintenance of ancient mosques in Egypt during the past five years, announced the Ministry of Endowments in a statement.
Around 200 million Egyptian pound of the total sum were provided from the budget of the ministries of Endowment and Antiquities, while the other 200 million Egyptian pounds were personal efforts and international grants allocated to the Ministry of Antiquities.
This comes as part of the state’s keenness to maintain its historical antiquities, and the ancient mosques as well.
A statement by the Ministry of Endowments today stated that for the first time in Egypt, the archaeological holdings transferred in the mosques were documented, as the total of what was documented and recorded by the joint committees between the endowments and antiquities reached (2537) archaeological holdings.
Last Friday, the Ministry of Endowments opened 30 new mosques, and finalized the restoration of three other mosques, with a total of 33 mosques, raising the total number of inaugurated mosques since September 2020 to 880 mosques.
