Egypt’s cabinet denies rumors of plans to demolish archaeological palaces

CAIRO – 10 February 2021: Egypt’s Cabinet media center denied rumors circulated in a video alleging that the government is planning to demolish archaeological palaces under the pretext of establishing national projects.

The center ensured in a Wednesday statement that the Tourism Ministry has denied the news as rumors, confirming that there is not any intention to demolish archaeological palaces.  

For its part, the ministry stressed the state’s keenness to preserve all Egyptian antiquities including buildings and palaces “because they are considered invaluable wealth.”

The ministry further added that there is a plan to restore archaeological palaces across the country to maintain its identity.

Recently, the government has inaugurated the Baron Empain Palace in Heliopolis after its renovation. Also, Prince Yusuf Kamal Palace was opened in Naga Hammadi after restoration works were finalized. Currently, the government is carrying out restoration works at Mohamed Ali Palace in Shubra district.

The Ministry called on all media outlets and social media users to be careful and accurate before publishing such rumors, which may confuse public opinion and provoke the anger of citizens.
