CAIRO – 4 February 2021: Egypt was elected on Wednesday to chair the 5th session of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission, succeeding Canada, according to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
Egypt’s nomination at the level of the African group was endorsed by the New York-based commission, the statement said, noting Egypt became a candidate representing Africa to assume this important international position.
“Electing Egypt to chair the Peacebuilding Commission for the first time has crowned the efforts of Egyptian diplomacy over a decade and a half in supporting the United Nations peacebuilding structure since its inauguration in 2005,” said ambassador Mohamed Idris, Egypt's permanent representative to the United Nations.
He affirmed Egypt’s intention to continue working on mobilizing international support for peace building in countries affected by conflicts, especially in Africa, which occupies the largest share of the committee's work program.
"Egypt, as an African country, remains fully committed to ensure the United Nations peacebuilding architecture remains engaged on the continent, noting that, in 2020, the Commission worked in support of 15 country- and region-specific contexts, including 12 in Africa," he said in another statement by the United Nations.
