CAIRO – 30 January 2021: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi sent messages to Arab leaders, expressing Egypt’s intention to re-nominate Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Abul Gheit for a second five-year.

In his message, President Sisi said that he is looking forward to the Arab leaders’ support for Abul Gheit n terms of the Charter of the League of Arab States.

It is scheduled to take a decision in this regard at the next Arab summit scheduled for next March, in accordance with the Charter.

If the Arab summit is not held in the first half of this year 2021, Arab leaders must authorize Arab foreign ministers to solve this matter through a meeting of the Arab League Council at the level of Arab foreign ministers and before the end of the Secretary-General's first term, on 30 June.

Aboul Gheit is an Egyptian politician and diplomat who has been Secretary-General of the Arab League since July 2016. Aboul-Gheit served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt from 11 July 2004 to 6 March 2011. Previously he was Egypt's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
