CAIRO – 23 January 2021: Concert promoter Ahmed Ganzoury was released Saturday pending investigations in a notorious gang rape case known as “the Fairmont incident.”
On Jan. 6, Nazly Mostafa and Seif el-Deen Ahmed were released pending the same case, where they went to the police as witnesses four months ago, but the prosecution decided they were involved in the case and were therefore detained.
Three defendants, Ahmed Toulan and brothers Amr Hussein and Khaled Hussein were deported from Lebanon, to which they headed soon after the social media backlash in July, have recently lost an appeal to be released as investigations continue.
The case dates back to 2014, where a girl, whose identity is protected, says she was gang raped in Fairmont Hotel in Cairo. The case stirred much controversy on social media, until the girl came forward to the National Council for Women, which then filed a case on her behalf.
