CAIRO – 6 January 2021: Nazly Mostafa and Seif el-Deen Ahmed have been released from their detention pending investigation of the notorious gang rape case known as the “Fairmont Hotel incident,” according to a General Prosecution statement Wednesday.
Mostafa, daughter of Egyptian actress Noha al-Amrousy, and Ahmed, who is claimed to have been 14 at the time of the crime, went to the police as witnesses four months ago, but the prosecution decided they are involved in the case and were therefore detained. Three defendants, Ahmed Toulan and brothers Amr Hussein and Khaled Hussein were deported from Lebanon, to which they headed soon after the social media backlash in July, have recently lost an appeal to be released as investigations continue.
The case dates back to 2014, where a girl, whose identity is protected, says she was gang raped in Fairmont Hotel in Cairo. The case stirred much controversy on social media, until the girl came forward to the National Council for Women, which then filed a case on her behalf.
