CAIRO – 29 December 2020: President of the National Council for Women (NCW) Maya Morsy congratulated the survivors of the sexual crimes of Ahmed Bassam Zaki, a man exposed a few months on social media for his assaults, for their redress in a Tuesday court sentence against him.
Zaki was sentenced to three years in prison by the Economic Court for blackmailing girls on social media, while his sexual charges are still being deliberated at the Criminal Court. Three girls have come forward to report him, but he is said to have many more victims.
“The state with all its institutions is adamant that they protect women from violence. The difficult journey continues,” Morsy said in a Facebook post.
She thanked Attorney-General Hamada el-Sawy and the Egyptian judiciary, as well as the legal complaints and psychological supports departments at the NCW. She also mentioned lawyer Mohamed Hamouda, who volunteered to represent the girls in the case.
