CAIRO – 24 December 2020: Minister of Industry and Trade Nevine Gamea stated Wednesday that more than 45,000 fuel-powered vehicles were transformed into gas-powered vehicles in 2020.
The ministry is working into a target of transforming 150,000 vehicles in three years at a cost of LE1.2 billion.
Only cars manufactured less than 20 years ago and having engines whose capacity is at least 70 percent can be transformed. The procedure is carried by a state-owned company called Gastech, and its value – worth LE8,000-LE12,000 - is paid in installments.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources targets transforming 50,000 gasoline-powered cars into natural gas ones in FY2020/2021. The plan includes introducing 50 natural gas stations annually until the total hits 366.
The number of gas-powered vehicles – including taxis - in Egypt was 320,000 out of 7 million passenger cars in 2018.
