An inspection visit by police forces to public transport terminals in Alexandria – Jacqueline Mounir
CAIRO – 1 July 2017: Different Egyptian governorates severed penalties on drivers of public transport vehicles who imposed higher fees than those set by governorate authorities. This comes after the government increased fuel prices Thursday as part of a plan to gradually remove energy subsidies.
Governorate officials have been conducting inspection campaigns as well on public transport terminals to ensure drivers are abiding by rules and to listen to citizens’ complaints on violations.
Fayoum Governor Gamal Samy imposed a fine of LE 500 on drivers enforcing a higher fee, taking a bigger number of passengers, adding extra pick up/drop off points or making any other violations. That is in addition to withdrawing the driving license for six months and the car’s license for a month.
The governor of Menya Essam El Bedewy declared that excessive violations would incur the revocation of violators’ vehicles’ licenses.
The governor of Damietta Ismail Abdel Hamid decided to impose a fine of LE 250 on violators as well as withdrawing the vehicle’s licenses for a month. Repeating violations incurs a fine of LE 500 and the withdrawal of the license.
In Alexandria, four microbus drivers were referred to public prosecution for not abiding by the set fee starting at LE 3.5.
The governor of Port-Said Zaki Salah ordered police forces in the governorate to print out stickers for 11,000 taxis and 2,000 microbuses with the new fees to prohibit any violations by drivers which would incur the withdrawal of their licenses.
