1st day of Egyptian House election’s run-off concluded

CAIRO – 23 November 2020: Polling stations closed 9 PM local time, marking the end of the first day of the Egyptian House of Representatives elections' run-off conducted at home in 13 out of 27 governorates.

The governorates included in this first phase of the run-off are Giza, Fayoum, Beni Suef, Minya, Assiut, El Wadi El Gedid, Sohag, Qena, Luxor, Aswan, Alexandria, Beheira, and Matrouh.

The 2-day run-off for this phase will resume on Tuesday between 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Egyptian political parties' Youth Coordination Committee (YCC) announced earlier that it did not monitor any irregularities that affected the electoral process in the run-off.

The YCC said that the supervisors said the electoral process witnessed a moderate turnout on the first day.

“Our observers passed through a large group of polling stations since early morning to ensure the regularity of the electoral process," the YCC said in a statement on Monday, noting that the participation of youth is highly noticeable.

The Committee expected that the turnout is likely to increase afternoon with the return of the employees from their work.

Egypt’s House runoff election kicked off Monday in 13 governorates, including, the New Valley, Fayyoum, Beni Sweif, Minya, Assiut, Behaira, Sohag, Qena, Luxor, Aswan, Alexandria and Matrouh. Two hundred and twenty candidates are competing over 110 seats at the lower house of parliament.

The first phase of the election was held for Egyptian expats abroad from 21 to 23 October and locally from 24 to 25 October. The turnout for the first round of the polls was 28.6 percent.

The second phase was conducted on November 7 and 8 at a total of 9,468 polling stations in 13 remaining governorates.

The final results of Egypt’s House elections to be formally announced by the National Elections Authority on December 14.
