CAIRO – 14 November 2020: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi received on Saturday Former President of Namibia Sam Nujoma. The meeting was attended by Chief of General Intelligence Directorate Abbas Kamel and Namibian ambassador to Cairo.
The president congratulated the former Namibian chief of state on receiving Kemet Boutros Ghali Foundation's award for peace in appreciation for his efforts in settling conflicts on the African continent and his long struggle for his homeland to get independence.
The president expressed Egypt's pride of bilateral relations, and exchanged views with Nujoma on a number of African affairs, particularly the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
The former Namibian president stressed his country's support to Egypt's endeavors - taking into consideration the interests of each of the three states - during the negotiations.
Sisi reiterated the fundamentals of Egypt's stance aimed for concluding a legal binding agreement that preserves Egypt's water rights in tandem with fulfilling other states' development ambitions.
Nujoma praised Egypt's appreciated and diligent role in maintaining peace and security in Africa, and fulfilling "Silencing the Guns in Africa by 2020” initiative. He also stressed Egypt's importance and weight as a main actor in establishing the foundations of joint African work, and finding African solutions for African problems as well as security and peace issues on the continent.
The former chief state told President Sisi that Namibians still appreciate Egypt's backing to their independence from colonization in the last century. He added that Egypt continues to back Africa's causes, which was epitomized in its chairing of the African Union (AU).
