Egypt rejects any ‘forced demographic change’ in Syria

CAIRO – 5 November 2020: Egypt voiced its rejection of any “forced demographic change” could occur in Syria, announced Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in a meeting with UN secretary-general for Syria Geir Pedersen in Cairo on Thursday.

Shoukry highlighted the need for political moves, with decisive and effective combating against armed terrorist organizations that transport from Syria to other areas of disputes, according to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister affirmed Egypt’s continued efforts in contacting all the concerned parties in the Syrian file, praising the UN efforts to solve the Syrian crisis politically, the statement added.

Pederson visited Damascus, on October 25, 2020,to discuss ways to resume talks on amending the Syrian constitution this month in Geneva, according to a statement from the UN on October 27.

On October 4, 2020, Shoukry received a phone call from Pedersen, discussing the latest developments in Syria. They discussed ways to advance the political settlement of the Syrian crisis as the Egyptian Minister stressed Egypt's supportive stance towards finding a solution to the Syrian crisis in a way that preserves the Syrian unity and its independence, in light of Egypt’s communicative efforts with the “moderate” Syrian opposition.

Shoukry also reiterated Egypt’s call for confronting terrorist and extremist organizations and their regional supporters, the statement continued.
