CAIRO - 1 November 2020: Egypt expressed its sincere condolences for the death of 140 people who drowned after a boat carrying more than 200 people sank off the coast of Senegal, according to a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.

“Egypt also reaffirms, in this regard, the need to coordinate the efforts of the international community to combat human trafficking and smuggling networks,” the statement said.

The International Office for Migration (IOM) announced on Thursday the accident, saying it is "the deadliest shipwreck recorded in 2020."

“We call for unity between governments, partners, and the international community to dismantle trafficking and smuggling networks that take advantage of desperate youth,” said Bakary Doumbia, IOM Senegal Chief of Mission in a statement.
