CAIRO – 17 October 2020: A third criminal in the case dubbed in media as “Al-Maadi girl crime” was detained for four days pending investigation for killing and robbing an 18-year-old girl in Maadi district, southern Cairo.
The victim, Mariam, was killed after one of two muggers in a microbus yanked her backpack, causing her head to smash with a nearby car, the Egyptian Public Prosecution said, citing an eyewitness.
As per the initial investigations, the two people confessed that they robbed the girl and ran away, without knowing that she was killed. They insisted that they did not mean to kill her.
On Friday, Egyptian Attorney-General Hamada al-Sawi ordered four-day detention against two other muggers, who confessed their crime.
The third suspect faces accusations of helping carry out the crime with the two other people, according to the General Prosecution.
This refutes an earlier claim on social media that the motive behind the incident was harassment.
