Egypt’s Sisi doubles women’s quota in the Senate

 

CAIRO – 16 October 2020: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi issued a presidential decree to appoint 20 women in the Egyptian Senate [the upper house of the parliament], doubling the women quota in the parliamentary formation.

 

 

As per Article 24 of Law No. 141 of 2020 for the Senate, the president has the right to allocate at least 10 percent of 100 appointed members for women. 

 

 

Egypt’s Senate is ready for its inaugural session on October 18, which will be witnessing the electing of the Speaker and the two deputies.

 

 

The historic hall of the Senate was announced to be fully prepared with all needed technologies and equipment including a fully electronic voting system.

 

 

On October 1, President Sisi issued, decree no. 577 of 2020 to invite the Senate to hold its first regular session of the first legislative term on Sunday, October 18, at 12 p.m. local time. The decree was published in the Official Gazette.

 

 

In August, Counselor Lashin Ibrahim, head of the National Elections Authority and deputy president of the Court of Cassation announced that 8.959 million voters cast their ballots in the Senate elections.
