Senior citizens in Egypt’s Alexandria granted free public transport service

CAIRO – 9 October 2020: Egyptian elderly citizens over the age of 70 have been allowed to get into all means of the public transportation for free in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, Major General Mohamed al-Sharif, the Governor of Alexandria announced in a statement on Friday.

 

Meanwhile, the senior people over the age of 60 were also allowed to ride all public transport means with half-fare tickets, the decision says.

 

The exempted senior citizens are required only to show their IDs before getting into any public transportation mean.

 

Transportation Minister Kamel al-Wazir made the announcement on October 3, 2020, that Senior citizens above 70 years of age have been exempt from the metro ticket, while those above 60 will have a 50 percent discount upon showing their national ID.

 

On the International Day for Older Persons, on October 1, the Egyptian Minister Nevin Al-Qabbag said that it has been agreed with al-Wazir to apply such decisions for the senior citizens. 

 

According to the latest data from the Egyptian Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), the senior citizens who are above the ages of 60 constitute 6.6 million in 2019 in Egypt.
