CAIRO – 9 October 2020: An Egyptian meteorologist ruled out that Egypt would be directly affected by the large and deep Ozone hole over the Antarctic.
In a phone call with Egyptian T.V. channel Extra News, meteorologist Eman Shaker announced that the hole of the Antarctic Ozone layer could not have a direct effect on Egypt because it locates in the northern part of the earth.
The hole would definitely impact the whole countries’ activities and cause an increase in the earth's temperature, she added.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) published on October 6, 2020, a report indicating that the Antarctic Ozone hole reached a maximum size after recording the largest and deepest annual depletion.
“The 2020 ozone hole grew rapidly from mid-August and peaked at around 24 million square kilometers in early October. It now covers 23 million km2, above average for the last decade and spreading over most of the Antarctic continent,” the report says.
On September 17, 2020, Egypt participated in the world celebration of the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, which comes under the slogan “Ozone for Life.”
Egyptian Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad said in a statement on September 17, 2020, that the Ministry of Environment has managed to get rid of about 99% of ozone-depleting substances, saying “we are working on getting rid of the least harmful substances, Chlorofluorocarbon (HCFCs), via reducing the consumption by 70 percent by the end of 2024, to completely dispose of these materials before 2030.”
