Concerns over a coup pushed the Qatari state to call up army reserve soldiers through SMS on Wednesday
CAIRO – 29 June 2017: Concerns over a coup pushed the Qatari state to call up army reserve soldiers through SMS on Wednesday.
The message reads:
“Attendance Alert: All reserve soldiers have to be present tomorrow, Thursday, June 29, 2017 afternoon in Information Systems building, Networking Department, fourth floor. Anyone who would not attend will be held accountable. Note: Cell phones are prohibited in the hall and arrival half an hour earlier is mandatory. Regards, National Service Authority.”
There has been an intensive security presence in the streets of Qatar since Eid, reflecting a huge security concern.
Qatari security concerns were sparked by the rise in opposition groups against the ruling regime in the aftermath of the decision made by many Arab states to cut ties with the country for supporting terrorism.
The Turkish parliament ratified a 2014 agreement with Qatar earlier this month, allowing the deployment of troops to its base there. That is in addition to Qatar’s military cooperation with Iran.
