CAIRO – 6 October 2020: The Public Prosecutor ordered Monday the release of the journalist Basma Mostafa pending investigations into publishing false news accusations, which she has denied.
Mostafa, who works for the local platform al-Manassa, was detained in Luxor, and been questioned.
The charge drawn against her is publishing false news, on her social media account, which would disrupt public peace “considering her work on some news websites, covering social issues and issues of public concern, including the Coronavirus pandemic.”
Mostafa has denied all charges as untrue.
The Public Prosecution office checked the Mostafa’s accounts on social media, and found it deactivated; however, Mostafa said she does not know the reason why it is inactive.
She was ordered released, and investigations into the accusations against her will continue, according to the prosecution.
