CAIRO – 27 June 2017: Qatari Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, planted a kiss on Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s forehead as he received him on Monday on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr.
Qaradawi, an important figure for the Muslim Brotherhood, was branded a terrorist, along with 28 figures and 12 organizations earlier this month by four Arab countries; namely Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the U.A.E. and Bahrain.
Qaradawi is considered to be one of the most controversial clerics in the Gulf and Arab regions, mainly for his provision of intolerance and violence-inciting fatwas.
A video interview showed Qaradawi articulating his permission of suicide bombing if required as a necessary tactic by a wider group and not an individual in times of war.
On June 5, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Yemen, Libya and the Maldives announced they were severing ties with Qatar. Jordan also announced it was downgrading their diplomatic representation with Qatar.
The move came at the end of a few weeks of tensions between Qatar and GCC neighbors.
