Many countries hail Egypt’s steps toward stabilizing Libya

CAIRO – 7 June 2020: A lot of Arab and other countries have praised Cairo declaration announced by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Saturday on Libya, pushing for a ceasefire in the war-torn country.

The planned ceasefire, suggested by Sisi along with the Libyan parliament speaker and commander of the Libyan National Army, is set to start on Monday, June 8. The declaration also includes a call for the removal of foreign mercenaries from Libya and further political recommendations.

The United States’ Embassy in Libya hailed the step, saying the US is “watching with interest as political voices in the East of Libya find expression.”

“We look forward to seeing these voices incorporated into a genuine nationwide political dialogue immediately following the resumption of the UNSMIL-hosted 5+5 talks on the modalities of a ceasefire.”

“We welcome efforts by Egypt and others to support a return to the UN-led political negotiations and the declaration of a ceasefire. We call on all sides to participate in good faith to halt the fighting and return to the UN-led political negotiations.”

The Russian Embassy in Egypt called the initiative “important” and has praised the efforts aiming at settling the dispute and restore peace in the Libyan territory.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, in a phone call with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, has affirmed France’s support to Cairo Declaration and the political settlement in Libya.

Le Drian called for unifying the Libyan state institutions, including financial institutions, and organizing parliamentary and presidential elections.

Commenting on the declaration, Saudi Arabia has welcomed all international efforts aiming to stop the fight in Libya and go back to the political path, on the basis of the relative international initiatives and resolutions, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Also, the Yemeni Foreign Ministry in a statement affirmed the country’s support to the “brothers” in Libya, in order to reach a comprehensive political solution to the Libyan crisis, in accordance with international resolutions and under the supervision of the United Nations so that security, stability and peace prevail in Libya.



Sisi announced the Cairo declaration after a tripartite meeting with the commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar and Speaker of Libyan Parliament Aguila Saleh on Saturday.

Sisi said that the political initiative would pave the way for a return to normal life in Libya. Sisi warned against using military tactics to resolve the crisis.

A political solution is the only way to resolve the crisis in Libya, Sisi said, adding that Libya's security is a pillar for Egypt's security.

All Libyan parties have been asked to partake in the ceasefire, al-Sisi said, adding that LNA Chief Haftar and the eastern parliament head Aguila Saleh are committed to protecting the Libyan people’s best interests.

Under the guidelines of the ceasefire, all foreign fighters must withdraw from Libya, he added.
