Egypt’s approach to protecting the environment

CAIRO – 25 June 2017: With June 5 being World Environment Day, in many parts of the world the entire month of June is dedicated to environment-related events and initiatives. Consequently, it is a good time to present Egypt’s approach protecting the environment and facing the global ecological challenges posed to one of the world’s most ancient civilizations.

The Ministry of Environmental Affairs, in cooperation with local and international development partners, develops environmental policies and programs that drive Egypt towards sustainable development. In the words of the ministry, “The human is the center of any development effort; humans deserve a better life, free of pollution.”

The ministry has identified seven key areas for focus on environmental policies, comprising recycling waste, saving environmental protectorates, water pollution, saving energy, e-government, air pollution and climate change challenges.

In addition to World Environment Day, the entire month of June is dedicated to protecting the natural environment. United Nations member states utilize this month to stimulate awareness of ecological challenges and to enhance political action on issues such as climate change. June also marks World Oceans Day (June 8), Global Wind Day (June 15) and the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (June 17).
