CAIRO – 22 June 2017: The Cabinet agreed Thursday, to extend the state of emergency declared in April by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, for three more months.
Following the attacks that took place on April 9 that targeted the Mar Girgis Church in Tanta and St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Alexandria, killing and injuring dozens, Sisi announced a state of emergency for three months in Egypt “for the sake of eliminating terrorism.”
Since October 2014, a state of emergency has been in effect in the Sinai Peninsula; however, after the series of terrorist attacks in Alexandria, Tanta and Minya, the emergency state was extended across the country.
