CAIRO – 1 May 2020: The Egyptian Ministry of Interior mourned the death and injury of army officers and soldiers in North Sinai in a terrorist attack on Thursday, and denounced the terrorists’ “abortive attempts” to harm the nation.
The attack on North Sinai’s Bi’r Al-Abd caused the death or the injury of eight army soldiers and two officers, said Military Spokesman Tamer Al-Rifae, without specifying the exact number of deaths.
“Such abortive attempts will not stop the brave Armed Forces’ men from defensing the resources of the nation,” the ministry said in a brief statement.
The ministry also wished the injured army men speedy recovery.
Also, Minister of Justice Omar Marwan condemned the attack, saying the “blood of the martyrs enhances our determination to eradicate the roots of corruption and protect our nation and humanity from its evil.”
Egypt has been countering terrorism and extremism ideologies over the past years since the ouster of late Muslim Brotherhood President Mohamed Morsi. Several operations have been taking place in Sinai against terrorists, as many Egyptian officers and soldiers have martyred in the battle.
The armed forces’ victims on Thursday were killed as a result of an explosive device blast which targeted an armored vehicle affiliated with the army.
