Egyptian FM heads to Algeria to attend Libya meeting

CAIRO – 22 January 2020: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Wednesday headed to Algeria, to attend the ministerial meeting for countries neighboring Libya, scheduled for Thursday, to discuss the Libyan issue.

The meeting will review the latest developments concerning the Libyan issue, foreign ministry spokesperson Bassam Radi said, adding that representatives of Libya’s neighboring countries will discuss future steps in light of the Berlin summit on Libya.

They will also discuss consolidating joint efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement in the war-torn country, including restoring security and stability in the sisterly country.

Berlin conference on Libya Kicked off Sunday with the aim of concluding a truce between warring parties and paving the way for reconstruction under an elected civilian government.

The Participating States in the conference pledge not to interfere in Libyan domestic affairs.

The countries taking part in the conference included Egypt, the United States, Russia, China, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Turkey, European Union, the UAE, Algeria, Congo, Arab League and African Union. The Tunisian president declined the invitation to attend the conference because it was late.

In a conclusion statement, they said that the ongoing situation in Libya threatens the international stability and security, calling upon the conflicting parties in Libya to make a truce.

They also called on the United Nation Security Council to impose sanctions against any Libyan party violates the ceasefire, the statement said.
