CAIRO, Dec 23 (MENA) - President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has given directives to establish a central multi-service railway station in Giza's Bashtil city.

During a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli and Transport Minister Kamel el Wazir on Monday, the president stressed the importance of modernizing the Egyptian transport sector, which he said is of great importance to the state's sustainable development plans.

The president also ordered Madbouli and Wazir to finalize agreements with international firms to import locomotives and train cars as soon as possible to develop the Egyptian railway sector, presidential spokesman Bassam Rady said.

Sisi further called for finalizing a new metro project in Alexandria's Abu Qir, as well as developing the tramway system in Raml neighborhood to serve the people of the Mediterranean city.

In earlier statements, Wazir said that the city of Bashtil has been chosen for the project due to its proximity to Cairo's main railway station in Ramsis and its unique location as a gate to Upper Egypt.

The project will also help link different means of transport and relieve pressure on the main train stations in Cairo and Giza, he noted.
