CAIRO - 18 October 2019: Delegations from Hands off Cain, an anti-death penalty organization based in Rome, and the Arab Organization for Human Rights visited Marg Prison in Qalyubia Wednesday.

The visit followed a two-day symposium held by the two organizations in Cairo on means to reduce the capital punishments in the country. In a gesture applauded by Hands off Cain, which was founded in Brussels in 1993, the symposium was attended by representatives from the ministries of interior, foreign affairs and solidarity, as well as the deputy of the Grand Mufti, lawmakers, lawyers, judges and civil society members.

Treasurer of Hands off Cain, Elisabetta Zamparutti, took part in the visit, according to a Monday statement by Hands off Cain.

The visit and the symposium are part of "Containing the Death Penalty in Times of War on Terrorism," a project supported by the European Union. The recommendations of the symposium will be submitted to the Egyptian authorities.

The delegation inspected the visit halls, library, bakery, kitchen, hospital, vocational rehabilitation center, and discussed the prison conditions with the inmates.

The representatives of both organizations thanked the police for allowing the visit, according to a Wednesday statement by the Interior Ministry.
