CAIRO – 29 November 2019: Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi said that he would resign following deadly mass protesters against his government.
As per a statement issued by the Iraqi cabinet, Abdul-Mahdi announced that he would submit his resignation to the parliament as the lawmakers could choose a new government.
Abdul-Mahdi’s resignation came in response to the Iraqi most influential Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani’s call of change on Friday, the statement added.
In a televised Friday sermon, a Shiite clergyman, on behalf of Sistani, condemned the use of deadly force against the protesters and called upon the parliamentarians to consider their stance towards Abdul-Mahdi’s government.
It has been estimated that the number of Iraqi protesters who killed by security forces raised to more than 400 persons, besides injuring dozens over the past few weeks of protests against the government.
On Thursday, more than 50 people were killed by security forces in southern cities of Najaf and al- Nasiriyah, Reuters reported.
