Qatari media calls Saudi Council of Scholars “hypocrites”

CAIRO - 16 June 2017: Qatar’s media attacked Saudi Arabia Tuesday, calling its Council of Senior Scholars, the kingdom’s highest religious body, “hypocrites.”

Qatar lashed out after statements made Sunday by the Kingdom’s Grand Mufti and head of the Council of Senior Scholars, Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah Al-Sheikh, in which he stressed that the Arab and Islamic measures taken against Doha are "in the interest of the future of the people of Qatar."

Qatari newspaper Al-Raya was the one to publish the attacks, which included insults toward Saudi Arabian scholars. It later deleted the news completely from its site.



Al-Hayat newspaper said the Saudi Ministry of Culture and Information reacted to the attack Wednesday by adding the Qatar TV’s website, which also published the attacks, to its list of blocked websites.


Sunday, Saudi’s Grand Mufti said in statements to Al-Hayat that Saudi Arabia is a “proper Islamic country.” He called on the Muslim Brotherhood to stay away from “fanaticism and folly.”

He added that Saudi Arabia and other countries’ recent decisions against Qatar were due to its financing of terrorism, stressing that the decisions were "procedural matters that benefit the Muslims and benefit the future of Qataris themselves."
