CAIRO - 4 November 2019: Minister of Civil Aviation Younes al-Masry stated on Monday that he will meet within a few days with the Russian side to discuss the recent developments on the resumption of flights from Russia to the Egyptian resort cities.
CAIRO - 27 October 2019: British Envoy to Cairo Geoffrey Adams said in "Al Hekaya" talk show on Saturday that after the ban lift on flights from the UK to Sharm El Sheikh Airport both Egypt and the UK "can promote Sharm El Sheikh as a happy holiday destination."
In his speech at the inauguration of Terminal 2 of Sharm El Sheikh Airport after expansion, the minister said that officials of the UK Civil Aviation Authority expressed their fascination with the development of security measures at Sharm El Sheikh International Airport. He pointed out that a security system was designed to track passengers and baggage since their arrival as well as staff members.
Terminal 2 of Sharm El Sheikh International Airport was enlarged and started pilot operation on Monday. As such, the total annual capacity of the airport has become nine million passengers instead of seven million.
The plan is that the capacity becomes 20 million passengers per annum as the number of tourists to the resort city is rising, during winter in particular. For now, the number of gates was raised to 12 from 8. The total cost of development works in the airport has reached until present LE800 million.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has also upgraded the security systems inside and outside the airport, the outer fence, surveillance cameras, and border control counters.
