305 prisoners pardoned on occasion of October victory

CAIRO - 31 October 2019: The Prisons Sector at the Ministry of Interior released on Thursday 305 inmates, as 86 received presidential pardons and 219 were released on parole on the occasion of 6th of October War victory.

Earlier this month, a total of 399 prisoners were released as per a presidential pardon and on parole also on the occasion of October 6 victory. In September 2019, the Ministry of Interior released 403 prisoners in fulfillment of presidential pardons issued in August on the occasion of Eid al-Adha.

According to the constitution, the president has the right to issue pardons for convicted prisoners after consulting with the Cabinet. However, the perpetrators of certain crimes are not eligible for pardon. These crimes comprise arms trafficking, terrorism, drug trafficking of more than 10 kilograms, “heroin” trade regardless of the quantity, and revenge killing.

In October 2016, President Sisi announced the formation of a presidential pardon committee to examine the cases and designate eligible ones.
