CAIRO – 14 June 2017: South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit received Egyptian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmed Fadel on June 12 to discuss the details of the airlift of humanitarian aid from Egypt to South Sudan upon the orders of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.
Kiir had earlier called for help announcing the spread of famine in some South Sudanese states. Egypt’s response came within the framework of historical and tight relations between the peoples of both countries.
The meeting was attended by South Sudanese Presidential Affairs Minister and Egypt’s ambassador in South Sudan Ayman Mokhtar El Gamal and discussed mutual relations and other issues of interest to both countries.
The South Sudanese president expressed his appreciation of Sisi’s initiative in support to several domains in South Sudan, especially education. Egypt granted scholarships to many South Sudanese citizens.
“Egypt has been among the most understanding countries of the issues facing the new state,” Kiir stated, expressing hope that Egypt would continue to back South Sudan in all aspects of development.
