Four European member states at security Council called for emergency session over Turkish aggression in northern Syria
New York - 10 October 2019: Four European member states at security Council called for emergency session over Turkish aggression in northern Syria. France, Britain, Germany and Belgium called for the meeting amid reports about a UN Security Council closed door session on Thursday morning to discuss the situation.
Amid concerns about humanitarian consequences, no condemnation statement to the Turkish military offensive in northern Syria from United Nations has been issued.
During daily noon briefing at UN headquarter in New York, on Wednesday, the deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq for the General secretary, avoided the attack until journalists started to ask him about the UN response.
“UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is very concerned by developments in northern Syria and called for civilians to be protected in accordance with international law," Haq told reporters repeating the same statement of Tuesday.
"As the Security Council reaffirmed yesterday in its presidential statement, any solution must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria,” he added.
On Tuesday, spokesperson Stephan Dujarric, talked about humanitarian concerns in case of military attack. “They (UN humanitarian team in Syria) are planning for the worst, as humanitarians tend to do and as they need to do. prepares for worst”, he said.
