CAIRO – 27 September 2019: 118 terrorists killed, 33 shelters destroyed and 273 explosive devices were defused by Egypt’s forces during military operations in central and North Sinai, according to Friday statement.
It was added that the Army forces were able to destroy 7 SUVs on the northeast strategic direction, 83 on the western strategic direction and another 25 SUVs on the southern strategic direction.
Eleven tunnels were announced completely closed, along with seizing fifteen automatic rifles, three guns and two Rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) with the terrorists.
The operations which were taking place during the past period included foiling several attempts for illegal immigration inside the country for illegal immigrants from different nationalities.
Besides, large quantities of drugs were seized by Egypt’s forces and executed.
During these operations, and as result of engaging with the terrorist and ‘takfiri’ elements, one army officer, along with other nine soldiers were martyred, according to the statement.
Egypt has been countering terrorism and extremism ideologies during the past years, and especially after since the ousting of the late pro-Muslim Brotherhood president, Mohamed Morsi.
In February 2018, and under the title "Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018," Egyptian army in cooperation with police forces launched a comprehensive military operation targeting the hotbeds of terrorists nationwide especially in Northern and Central Sinai.
Sinai, in particular, has been a staging ground for militants operating in Egypt for decades. It is also believed to be home to the Islamic State’s Egyptian branch, which has been primarily targeting civilians and security forces.
