Egypt’s rights body affirms Qataris’ rights in Arab states

CAIRO – 12 June 2017: It is important that Qatari citizens’ rights are respected in Arab countries regardless of how relations stand between governments, the National Council of Human Rights (NCHR) said in a Monday statement.


The announcement came after recent developments in relations between a number of Arab countries and Qatar.


According to the statement, the NCHR urged non-infringement on the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of citizens whether they are aliens residing in Qatar or Qataris living in countries with strained diplomatic relations with the small Arab Gulf state.


On June 5, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Libya, Jordan and Bahrain announced the severance of diplomatic ties with Qatar, accusing the Gulf nation of "continuous support for terrorism” across the Middle East.
