Tunisian expats in Egypt vote in presidential election

CAIRO - 13 September 2019: Tunisian expatriates in Egypt headed Friday morning to the Tunisian embassy in Cairo to cast their votes in the presidential election race, in which 26 candidates compete after the death of later President Beji Caid Essebsi.

Electoral process at the embassy started at 8:00 a.m. (Cairo Time) and will last until 6:00 p.m. for 7,000 eligible voters among the expatriates in Egypt. Meanwhile, the election at 390 polling stations at other embassies and consulates in 44 countries around the globe kicked off Friday and would last for three days.

Around 400,000 Tunisian expatriates are eligible to cast their votes all over the world, according to the Independent High Authority for Elections (IHAE).

According to the IHAE data, 7.88 million eligible Tunisians will vote domestically on September 15 at 13,450 nationwide, and the voting results will be announced two days later.

Presidential frontrunners are imprisoned candidate Nabil Karoui, who went on hunger strike on Thursday in protest at his detention over charges of financial corruption, outgoing Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, former Moncef Marzouki Al Marzouki, Muslim Brotherhood’s Ennahda candidtae Abdel Fattah Mourou, outoing Minister of Defense Abdelkarim Zbidi, professor Kaïs Saïed anti-Islamist lawyer Abir Moussi.
