CAIRO – 9 July 2019: General Prosecutor Nabil Sadek ordered referring the complaints filed against officials of the Egyptian Football Association to the Interior Ministry’s General Department of Public Funds Crime Investigation Unit.
The complaints accuse the officials of charges including squandering public money. Sadek scheduled the session to open extensive investigation into the complaints and recall those who have submitted them.
Complaint No. 9274 of 2019 submitted by a lawyer blames money waste on the Football Association, as it had contracted with a failed coach, which caused the national football team to get knocked out from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Tournament in a humiliating way, according to the complaint.
The complaint argues that Article 116 bis (c) punishes intentional breach of contracts in violation of the regulations and laws, in the event of significant harm.
Moreover, complaint No. 9189 of 2019 was filed against the Chairman and members of the Board of Directors of the former Football Association, for crimes of negligence and default, waste of public money, profiteering and hiring foreign trainers for large sums of money, while they have even failed to pick the best elements to form a national team that can achieve the desired result.
In their complaints, the lawyers called for taking all necessary legal measures to seize the accused persons' money, banning them from travelling, and also arresting them for investigation.
The lawyers also called for referring those who are proven guilty to the urgent criminal trial, and obliging them to refund the money paid to the Mexican coach of the national team and his assistants since he was hired.
Egypt lost at their home in the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 33 years against South Africa in the 16th round.
Egyptian Football Association President Hany Abo Rida sacked the Egyptian national team coaching staff on the early hours of Sunday.
Abo Rida, as well as many board members, resigned from their position.
The Egyptian players let down the fans who packed the Cairo Stadium to support the team.
