Mubarak-era minister on re-trial over illicit gains charges

CAIRO – 10 June 2017: The Cairo Criminal Court, located in the Fifth Settlement, will begin the first session of a retrial for former Minister of Information Safwat al-Sherif on charges of illicit gains.

Sherif was sentenced to five years in prison, and fined LE 209.7 million ($11, 5 million) on charges of illicit gains and exploitation of official positions. His sentence was annulled by the Court of Cassation. Therefore, the Court of Appeal decided a retrial in a new court.
