CAIRO, June 16 (MENA) - Prime Minister Dr Mostafa Madbouli directed razing out buildings and squatter areas that were built without license inside the Madabegh (tanneries) area in Old Cairo along the large wall of Magra El-Eyoon, an aqueduct with numerous arches extending alongside a long road of the same name.
The government has decided to revive this whole ancient area and get it back in shape after having relocated tanneries to Roubeiki City. The renovation plan aims to develop the area in the best way possible at the social and economic levels.
During a tour of the area, Madbouli was briefed by the Cairo governor on the demolition of 117 tanneries whose owners have been compensated.
Magra El-Eyoon was built in the time of Sultan Al-Ghoury over 800 years ago with the purpose of providing the Saladin Citadel with pure drinking water straight from the Nile. It operated through wheels that brought up the water to the aqueduct, which then flowed all the way to the Citadel.
