CAIRO – 6 June 2019: The Indonesian Embassy in Cairo opened on Wednesday its doors for thousands of Indonesian people in Egypt to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the embassy said in a statement.

A total of 5,000 Indonesian people, including students who study at Al Azhar University, celebrated Eid al-Fitr – a two-day festival Muslims worldwide celebrate to mark the end of fasting the Holy Ramadan month- at the embassy headquarters downtown Cairo, the statement added.

“Eid al-Fitr is one of the most tremendous opportunities for forgiveness and preserving the unity and fraternity among Indonesian citizens in Egypt who are unable to return home to celebrate Eid among their families in Indonesia,” said Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt Helmy Fawzy.

In his speech after Eid prayer at the embassy, Ambassador Fawzy added that family gathering is one of the Indonesian habits on the day of Eid. Family gatherings remind Indonesians about the values and culture of their country amid the spread of globalization among the current generation, he said.

Dwi Ria Latifa, the ambassador's wife and a member of the Indonesian Parliament, wished the celebrating people a happy Eid Iftr, saying “Celebrating Eid at the embassy is a waited occasion for thousands of Indonesian citizens in Egypt,” where they meet and feel the spirt of family and fraternity despite the long distance between them and their country.

“The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Cairo made sure to bring a festive atmosphere similar to the celebration in Indonesia for whole Indonesian community in Egypt. In addition, it offers cultural and Indonesian food to all its citizens,” the embassy said in a statement.

Ambassador Fawzy and Mrs. Latifa shared the celebrating attendants their festival atmosphere through offering musical performance while using the Guitar.

Over the past two years, we have seen quite a significant increase in the number of Indonesian students who study in Egypt,” said Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt Helmy Fawzy during a Ramadan Iftar on May 27, adding that the last year, 2,000 new Indonesian students arrived in Egypt.
