CAIRO - 14 May 2019: The prosecution ordered detaining a church guard, charged with murdering Priest Makar Saad of St. Mark’s Church in Cairo’s northern Shubra al-Khaimah district on Monday, for four days pending investigation.
Church guard Kamal Shawky, 54, who turned himself in, faces charges of premeditated murder, possessing unlicensed gun and bullets.
The victim was shot dead in his room in the church. The murderer admitted the crime, saying that the late priest promised to provide him with financial support, but he did not deliver on his promise. A fight started between them, he said, before he fired many times at the priest from a 9 mm handgun that he hid.
The security directorate said that Priest Makar Saad had previously given Kamal LE 1,000 to help him with his daughters' wedding expenses.
The Church offered its condolences for the Priest, saying the funeral will be held when the investigation ends. The church said it will not be responsible for any statement or comments could be circulated on social media, adding that all statements concerning the incident will be published on its official website.
