CAIRO - 26 April 2019: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi met with a number of world leaders at a dinner banquet held by Chinese President Xi Jinping in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The Dinner banquet was held on the sidelines of the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRFIC). The Belt and Road Initiative was launched by the Chinese government to enhance trade, investments, and infrastructure in more than 150 countries in Asia, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. The initiative is a revival to what was known as “The Silk Road.”

During the dinner, President Sisi met with Portuguese counterpart Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and President of the Swiss Confederation Ueli Maurer, discussing a number of megaprojects in Egypt. He also tackled with them cooperation between the South Mediterranean countries and African states, besides issues of mutual concerns, particularly the ways of combating the illegal migration.

In his speech at the opening session at BRFIC, President Sisi called upon Chinese and member states of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to invest in the inter-African megaprojects of Cairo-Cape Town Road and VICMED (a trade shipping route starting from Lake Victoria in Central Africa to the Mediterranean Sea).
