‘We celebrate a century of women’s solidarity with the homeland’: NCW chair

CAIRO - 30 March 2019: Egyptian Women Day ceremony kicked off on Saturday and is attended by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi who will honor a number of women and ideal mothers.

“This year, we celebrate a century of women’s solidarity with the homeland and of best representation of Egypt locally and abroad by women,” Chairperson of the National Council for Women Maya Morsy said in her speech referring to the fact this month marks the 100th anniversary of 1919 revolution against the British colonization where women took part for the first time collectively in political struggle.

“Your past is a civilization carved in history,” Morsy stated addressing women. “The political leadership has preserved the rights of Egyptian women...Our president is still the top defender and supporter of women's rights,” Morsy added citing a previous statement by President Sisi saying, “There is nothing that prohibits you from achieving your dreams. You only have to continue making efforts, working, and getting equipped with education and willpower. And, it is our duty to open doors for you to achieve (your) dreams and ambitions.”

The ceremony is organized by the Ministry of Social Solidarity, Ministry of Planning, and the National Council for Women.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli, Defense Minister Mohamed Zaki, Social Solidarity Minister Ghada Wali and Planning Minister Hala el Saaed along with other ministers and senior officials.

Upon their arrival at the venue of the celebration, President Sisi and First Lady Intissar al-Sisi posed for a photo-op with the ministers of social solidarity and planning along with 42 women who will be honored during the celebration.
