CAIRO - 17 March 2019: Chairman of the African Union Commissions (AUC) Moussa Faki hailed Saturday Egypt’s role in the establishment of the fundamentals of the Organization of the African Union which was the base to establish the current African Union (AU).

That was in his speech at the launch of the first edition of the Arab and African Youth Platform held in Aswan.

“Who does not remember that the first summit of the Organization of the African Union was held in Cairo in 1964. Egypt also hosted among others the summit that founded the system regulating conflict resolution and pre-crisis planning which was the beginning to form the Peace and Security Department at AUC and the mechanisms it adopts. In that context, I would like to shed light on the role played by Egypt to develop the African agenda with regard to building peace and development post-conflict,” Faki said.

“Your chairmanship is taking place during a remarkable point of history. We achieved milestones in achieving integration among the continent through strategic projects that have long-term impact,” Faki explained saying “hat is epitomized in “the endorsement of the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA) and the Free Movement Protocol (expected) to push forward integration among countries in the continent after the end of colonization and racial discrimination. Integration is our dream and ultimate aspiration.”

“Our leaders decision to ‘silence the guns’ by 2020 is a great challenge. The accomplishment of the institutional reform of the organization, particularly the implementation of the 0.2 levy (on imports), is an indispensible decision to guarantee our financial and political independence, and acting freely in accordance with the interests of our peoples,” Faki added.

“Allow me to highlight the status of youth in the joint Arab and African perspective. Regardless of shared history and destiny, we both face the same challenges embodied in unemployment, illegal migration, the promotion of destructive ideologies, terrorism, intellectual and religious deviations,” Faki said.

Faki affirmed that the AU will always represent the struggle of its peoples and work on fulfilling their “legitimate ambitions.”
